The ¡°Seminar on promoting international meetings to be convened in Beijing was held on July 23rd, 2012, in Beijing, attracting more than 100 from academic societies attached to the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and national industrial associations. As a highlight, a strategic co-operation agreement was signed by Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development & China International Conference Center for Science and Technology (CICCST) during this conference.

Beijing is making pains-taking efforts to build itself into the capital of international conferences & exhibitions, as well as the destination of high-end tourism. Consequently, top priority has been given to meetings and incentives by Beijing¡¯s tourism industry. In order to strengthen networking and co-operation with social societies, to help them apply for and organize international meetings, Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development and CICCST jointly held this seminar.

Sun Weijia, Vice Chairman of Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development, delivered a speech

Sun Weijia, Deputy Director of Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development, delivered a speech during the meeting, saying that Beijing is the center of China¡¯s politics, culture, and international exchanges, and is also the most influential international convention city nationwide. According to the data released by ICCA, Beijing climbs to No.10 in 2011 against No.12 in 2010 in terms of the number of international meetings held, ranking top across China. This, in effect, signals that China has joined the rank of the international meetings tourism capitals, which in turn further consolidates its leading role in Asia. In an effort to vigorously develop meetings and incentives and to serve the building of ¡°World City¡±, Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development has taken a series of effective measures, including the founding of Beijing High-end Tourism and Meetings Industry Association (BHTMIA), the establishment of Beijing High-end Tourism Repository and Beijing Convention & Visitors Bureau (BCVB), and the implementation of stimulating policy Measures for Beijing Municipal Meetings and Incentives Encouragement Fund Management (for Trial Implementation). All these approaches have drawn wide attention to the meetings industry, especially the newly-released encouragement policy which has caused enthusiastic response. He hoped that all societies could make full use of the encouragement policy to proactively apply for the landing of international meetings in Beijing.

¡±Academic societies attached to CAST are pioneers in holding international meetings, which has helped accumulating plentiful experience in planning international conferences. Nevertheless, there still exist difficulties facing CAST in organizing global meetings, of which a lack of sufficient funds is most pressing.¡± Said Liang Yingnan, Vice Minister of the International Division of China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) made a speech at the conference. He also noted, ¡°the implementation of the stimulating policy is very timely and efficient, and academic societies attached to CAST and CICCST shall absolutely take full advantage of it so as to apply for the implementation of international meetings in Beijing.¡±

It is known that Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development and Beijing Municipal Bureau of Finance initiated the Measures for Beijing Municipal Meetings and Incentives Encouragement Fund Management, with RMB 20 million put aside to support the development of meetings and incentives, which is unprecedented in the history of China¡¯s meetings industry. We firmly believe that Beijing will enjoy a brighter future in the international meetings market through the very co-operation with China Association for Science and Technology, one that is reputable as a leader in holding conferences at home and abroad.
